Minority leaders across Bangladesh have voiced deep concern over ongoing incidents of land grabbing, attacks on homes and places of worship, and online hate speech aimed at inciting communal violence. They are urgently demanding the enactment of a “Minority Protection Act” and the establishment of dedicated fast-track tribunals to bring perpetrators to justice.
Speaking at a recent press conference held at the National Press Club, representatives from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council and the Sanatan Rights Forum highlighted that minority families in several districts—particularly in Chittagong, Jessore, Khulna, Mymensingh, and parts of the Chittagong Hill Tracts—continue to live under a shadow of insecurity.
Current Situation and On-the-Ground Reports
Jessore and Khulna Division: Multiple reports of intimidation and land-related disputes targeting minority families have emerged from rural areas in Jessore and Khulna. Local administrative officials and law enforcement agencies visited the affected spots, assuring victims of swift legal action.
Chittagong Division: Swift interventions by joint security forces successfully defused tension after agitators attempted to destabilize the area by spreading rumors on social media under the guise of hurt religious sentiments.
Heightened Security at Temples: Security measures have been reinforced at temples and places of worship in districts and upazilas across the country ahead of upcoming religious festivals. Alongside military patrols and police presence, local youth and students have joined efforts to guard temple premises.
Administrative Action
The Ministry of Home Affairs and law enforcement authorities reiterated that strict nationwide surveillance is underway to guarantee the safety and well-being of all religious minority families. Authorities warned that anyone attempting to provoke communal discord or engage in acts of violence will face decisive legal action, regardless of their political or social standing.
