Rights activists and civil society representatives have called on authorities to ensure equal security for all citizens and to uphold long-standing interfaith harmony.
Citizens and minority community organizations have expressed deep concern over repeated instances of violence, land grabbing, and vandalism sparked by rumors on social media or allegations of hurting religious sentiments. They alleged that the lack of prompt arrests and exemplary punishment for perpetrators has created a culture of impunity, allowing such incidents to recur.
Key Demands and Recommendations:
Judicial Probe and Legal Action: Swift, impartial, and transparent judicial investigations into all incidents of violence against minorities, ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice.
Enactment of Minority Protection Law: The formulation of a dedicated ‘Minority Protection Act’ and the establishment of an independent Minority Commission to safeguard human rights and prevent violence.
Enhanced Cyber Monitoring: Increased vigilance over social media platforms to curb the spread of inflammatory rumors and strict legal action against those inciting communal tension.
Compensation and Rehabilitation: Comprehensive government compensation and long-term security measures for affected families.
The civil society members emphasized that preserving Bangladesh’s historical tradition of communal harmony requires unified, proactive efforts from both the state and society.
